Simple Bug Hotel
Bug hotels are great for invertebrates such as solitary bees, spiders, woodlice, lady birds and more. Building a bug hotel doesn’t have to be a complex affair, they can be cobbled together using scrap materials in the garden. As you can see from the image, my bug hotel is a 3 star hotel, made from an old gate, bricks, slate slab, broken pots, sticks, logs, canes and old drain pipe. When I can scavenge more materials, I will add more tiers to it. The only tools I needed to construct Bug Plaza was a drill, drill bits and a hand saw. The size of the accomodation can be as big or as small as you like, my example was only 60 x 60cm in size.
In the past, I have built bug hotels from a 2 to 5 star rating, some intricate in design and build; some cobbled together with a 2 star rating. Whatever the star rating of a bug hotel, you can’t get away from the fact, bug hotels add a degree of charm to a garden and most importantly, habitat for so many insects.
